If you like hunting knives with a traditional trade knife flair, the Powder River may be the design for you. It has a very traditional profile that’s exceedingly versatile for today’s outdoorsmen.

Today’s post takes a look at two custom Power River knives that are very similar, showing the variation in handle material and blade finishes.

Sears Nessmuk Reproduction

Lucas Forge Posted on February 24, 2023 by Lucas ForgeJanuary 13, 2023

Sears Nessmuk, Lucas Forge, Custom Hunting Knife, Nessmuk, Nessmuk Knife, Nessmuk Reproduction, Traditional Camping KnifeIn 1884, Mr. George Washington Sears (1821-1890) published his book, “Woodcraft and Camping.”

The book focused on ultra-light camping and in it, there’s a woodcut showing a double bit hatchet, a pocket knife, and sheath knife. This special edition Lucas Forge knife is made to be a close reproduction of that sheath knife.

Lucas’ version features an aged 1/8-inch, O-1 high carbon steel blade, a rustic antler handle, and three brass pins. In addition, this knife doesn’t have the usual Lucas Forge etch, but a special one: Sears Nessmuk By Lucas Forge.

As you notice right off, both have blue box elder handles with very similar grain and coloration. The first knife is a standard ProSkinner, with  3 1/2-inch blade. The second knife has an extended blade, around 4 1/2-inches, for added working room. The top knife has a hammer forged finish; below we see a satin blade finish.

The top knife features the standard hardware…two brass pins and a lanyard hole. The knife below doesn’t have a lanyard hole, but features a trio of mosaic pins!

Both knives have patterned filework on the spine. First, we have the Classic pattern and below we have the Vine pattern, which do have slightly different looks even from the side view.
